Lead In

1. Choose a different student to read each question on the screen. Check that the students understand what was read.

2. Good lead in story about the kings crown, quicken the pace a little to keep the students' attention.

3. Eliminate the word "so" from your vocabulary.

4. Good illustrations for the vocabulary terms.

5. Consider reminding the students the difference between mass and weight and how they are different.

6. Let the students do the calculations on volume.

7. SAFETY CONCERN: When mixing liquids the receiving container should always be on the table and never in a the hands of anyone.

8. When reviewing "immiscible liquid have the students describe in their own words instead of reading off the screen.

9. In a normal teaching situation you would have the students keep track of experiments in a lab notebook. You would have them record materials and procedures prior to the day of the experiment. On the day of the lab they would be more focused on the experiment and recording the observed data.

10. Have a small worksheet prepared for students to fill in the answers on paper regarding the demonstration of oil on the water.

Linking words in speaking

11. While using power points you should circulate around the room more during the presentation. With the clicker you can be anywhere in the room to change the slide. This leads to more effective classroom management.

12. Once a again choose students to read the questions and then check for understanding.

13. Good job with clarifying that students will answer yes or no. A better approach would be to change the 4 questions to higher order thinking. For example, ask "What do you notice about the helium filled balloon?" When you ask yes or no questions 50% of students will get the answer right just by guessing.

14. Once again, when showing the video circulate around the room.

15. Instructions on moving the tables should be better articulated.

16. Great student activity. Smile Good that you could have all students participate. Great job with giving time limits on transitions. If possible have an electronic timer on the wall so they can see how much time is left.

Pillar 2 (Experiment)

17. When dividing the class consider using some technique such as numbering the students and then having the "ones" move to a locations, the "twos" to their location, etc.

18. Consider using the word "problem" instead of "purpose" when discussing the experiment.

19. Great job pointing out to set the scale to zero with an empty beaker on it.

20. Before putting the objects into the beaker you should have the students predict what will happen. This is one of the most important parts of the scientific process, the hypothesis.

21. Once again, when the students come forward for materials have a system in place for designated students to pick up the materials. This is good for classroom management and student accountability.

pillar 2 reporting / pillar 3 cognition

22. Use the word "observations" instead of "conclusions".

23. A great tie-in would be for you to spray paint the plastic bottle caps gold. Students would easily make the connection back to your lead in story.

24. When introducing the 4 items that will be put in the beaker take a moment and have the students make some observations about the different materials. This will help them make better predictions as mentioned earlier.

25. Great wrap up with tying the experiment back to your lead in story and having the students restate what they should have learned. This was really the best part of your lesson.
